Wilson Sossion, who served as the former secretary general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), asserts that the curriculum that is now being taught in schools has never been “competency-based,” but rather “outcome-based.”

Sossion stated in an interview with Citizen TV on Friday that Kenyans are fooling themselves by believing in the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC), because it was not been accepted by parents and children.

“What we have in this country, what we have under implementation is not CBC as such. There has never been CBC in our classroom,” he said. “Teachers have never been teaching CBC, they are teaching outcome-based curriculum.”

Sossion argues that the rising challenges and public uproar against the CBC prove that the country made a mistake by not allowing the professionals the opportunity to develop and construct an effective program.

“We are cheating ourselves as a country because there has never been CBC in our classes, teachers are teaching outcome-based curriculum,” he stated.

“When a curriculum is not accepted by parents and children are not excited about it, it’s a wrong curriculum.”

Sossion continued by asserting that the CBC was hurriedly and politically imposed, and that there had been that there had been no discussions or summative evaluations of the curriculum.

“You cannot do a pilot between June 2017, and you end the piloting in October 2017 without even a summative evaluation report and you are talking of ruling it out the next year,” he said.

“We missed many things, and we will continue missing. Now we have an opportunity to remedy this through this committee review that taskforce will be domiciled to the president.”

The future of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will be decided by a task force that will be established next week by the President William Ruto, who took control of the country on Tuesday.

Ruto has announced that he will organize a Task Force to evaluate the success of Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2018 initiative.

Stakeholders have accused Kenyatta’s government of not consulting them enough throughout the program’s development, which has led to widespread criticism of the initiative.

The 8-4-4 system was intended to be replaced by this system.
